Great Oratory

These were the conditions that elicit great oratory, and, I must add, that underlie eloquence, which I look for in speaking today.
Is this too much to hope for?

  1. An able person, melding passion, intellect and history,
  2. an opponent of equal skill,
  3. the freedom to speak,
  4. a high moral purpose,
  5. confronting a great issue,
  6. in a situation that demands critical and bold decision,
  7. before an intelligent and educated audience capable of judging.

Who, in your opinion, among our national leaders has qualified as a great orator?
